Creating a dimension

In the Settings menu, click on Dimensions > Right-click to create a dimension

Specify the characteristics of the dimension, then confirm by clicking on the Validate button.

It will subsequently be necessary to define this dimension’s headings.

A dimension has the following characteristics:

 

Name

Give the dimension a name. This enables you to define the type of resources this dimension will contain.

If the multi-language management is activated in the Admin center, it will be possible to fill in a name for this dimension in the proposed languages by clicking on the v7_adm_en_parametres_generaux_symbole_multilangue button.

Description

Give the dimension a description. This data is optional.

History

This indicates the creation date and time and the most recent change to the dimension or its headings, together with the login of the user who performed these actions.

This property is updated automatically.

Enable event comments

Enable this button to enable the comment or forum functionality on the dimension’s resources.

These comments will be visible in the customized event editors if the attribute was selected when building the view.

Enable comment

If enabled, this button is used to enable the forum ​functionality on all the dimension’s resources.

Quick Filter

Enable this button to filter events according to a dimension filter in the Schedule and Diary views and the different Events views.

Load all resources

If you enable this button, all the dimension’s resources will be loaded in the memory when VISUAL PLANNING starts. Otherwise these resources are loaded according to the selected favorite display.

In this case, if there are less 1,000 resources they will be displayed in the form of a list when a resource is assigned to an event.

There is, however, no automatic update of the view (Resources, Planning) when creating a resource when this button is activated. You have to restart Visual Planning.

Automatic event creation

Enable this button when adding a new resource to automatically create an event which will be placed on the current date by default.

Events hierarchy

When the “Automatic event creation” button is enabled, this field enables you to choose the event hierarchy that will be used to create the event.

Detailed history – Enabled for events

Enable this button to track all the actions performed on the events of this dimension’s resources.

Click on the event’s history zone to display the modification history.

Important

In the editor of an event, once the detailed history has been enabled, the modifications performed since this event was created are displayed when you mouse over the attributes that have been modified.

Enable this button to track all the actions performed on this dimension’s resources.

Color

Give a default color for all this dimension’s future resources.

  • None: the dimension’s resources will not show a color,
  • Color: the dimension’s resources will show a default color. This color can subsequently be modified for each resource.
  • Heading:the resource will show the color of :
    • One of the resource’s headings if the heading’s values are in hexadecimal form (#xxxxxx),
    • The resources will show the color of one of the dimension’s resource-type headings, if applicable. You must choose the appropriate heading in the list.

Daily calendar

Define a default daily calendar for all this dimension’s future resources.

This calendar can subsequently be modified for each resource.

Events creation rule

Define a default event creation rule for all this dimension’s future resources.

This rule can subsequently be modified for each resource.

You do not have to define a creation rule. In this case the resources will not enable you to create an event by dragging and dropping.

Hourly calendar

Define a default hourly calendar for all this dimension’s future resources. This calendar can subsequently be modified for each resource.

Icon

Define a default icon for all this dimension’s future resources.

There are three possible options:

  • None: the dimension’s resources will not represent an icon,
  • Icon: the dimension’s resources will represent an icon from the album. In this case you must choose the default icon for this dimension’s resources from the album. This icon can subsequently be modified for each resource.
  • Heading: the resources will represent an icon drawn automatically according to the dimension’s headings. A window then opens where you must specify:
    • The icon’s background color,
    • The color of the characters,
    • The heading,
    • The number of characters making it possible to generate the icon.

Icon effect

Select the shape of the dimension’s icons.

There are 3 possible choices: no effect, icons with rounded corners, circular icons.

Unique headings

Select the headings that are used to define the uniqueness of this dimension’s resource.

Identification headings

Select the identification headings.

The identification headings are used for imports if the dimension is defined as a resource dependent on another dimension.

If there are several identification headings, the separator you use must be the separator defined in Separator.

Mandatory headings

Select the mandatory headings for this dimension.

Display headings

Select the headings representing each resource of the dimension in the form of a label in the different VISUAL PLANNING windows.

In particular they are displayed in the event editors and the assignment windows.

Separator

Define the character that will separate the identification and display headings in the representation of the dimension’s resources in the form of a label.

Creating the dimension’s headings

 

These are the headings that constitute the dimension and its resources.

A dimension can have the following types of headings:

 

Creating a dimension from a file

You can create a dimension directly from a CSV or XLS file.

To do so, go to the Settings menu , Click on Dimensions > Right-click to create a dimension from a file > Choose the appropriate file type.

Choose the file to import. The dimension is directly created if the file is a CSV or an XLS containing only one sheet.

  • The dimension’s name will be that of the file for a CSV file, and that of the sheet for an XLS file.
  • The titles of the columns will correspond to the headings.

Correspondence of heading types in an XLS file

The recognized columns in XLS files are:

  • Days with or without times, if they comply with the client workstation’s local date and time format: the data will be converted into a Date heading,
  • A character string separated by a | at the start and end: the data will be converted into a Multiple choice list heading,
  • A column header containing the word “file” and data comprising a long text and line returns: the data will be converted into an Attachment heading.

Correspondence of heading types in a CSV file

The recognized columns in CSV files are:

  • Days with or without times, if they comply with the client workstation’s local date and time format: the data will be converted into a Date heading,
  • A character string separated by a | at the start and end: the data will be converted into a Multiple choice list heading,
  • A column header containing the word “file” and data comprising a long text and line returns: the data will be converted into an Attachment heading,
  • A character string equal to false, true, yes or no: the data will be converted into a Boolean heading,
  • A Base 64 image (data:image): the data will be converted into icons of the resources,
  • A string of 7 characters starting with a #: the data will be converted into colors of the resources.

Creating a dimension from the headings of another dimension

 

You can create a dimension from one or more headings of another dimension.

Only one heading selected

Right-click on the heading > Convert into a Dimension heading.

Click on Yes to create a new dimension. Otherwise, click on No.

The new dimension is created with a heading of the same type as the heading used to create the dimension.

The old heading of the source dimension is transformed into a resource heading.

Select the headings that will be used to create a new dimension, then right-click on one of them > Convert into Dimension headings.

The following window appears.

Dimension's name

Enter the name of the new dimension. When validating the window, a confirmation window is displayed.

Click on Yes to create a new dimension. Otherwise, click on No.

The new dimension is created with headings of the same type as the headings used to create the dimension.

The old headings of the source dimension are transformed into resource headings of the newly created dimension.

Modifying a dimension

 

To modify a dimension you must change the schedule’s architecture template.

Warning

This is an important configuration task and should not be performed without careful consideration.

To modify a dimension, click on it in the Global Settings pane.

To modify a heading in this dimension, click on it in the Global Settings pane.

In both cases, the bottom pane is then enabled. You must now modify the chosen characteristics.

Deleting a dimension

 

To delete a dimension you must change the schedule’s architecture template.

Warning

This is an important configuration task and should not be performed without careful consideration.

Warning: deletion of a dimension is definitive and deletes all this dimension’s resources and these resourcesevents.

To delete a dimension, go to the Global Settings pane > Right-click > Delete.

The following message appears:

Click:

  • Yes to confirm the deletion,

  • No to cancel the deletion.
