Scheduling production orders (POs) without a clear method inevitably leads to the same situation: several orders require the same resources at the same time. Scheduling operates in the short term: it determines the exact sequence in which POs are processed on available resources, based on the shop floor’s actual constraints. Reliable scheduling cannot ignore the shop floor’s physical constraints: machine capacity, operator availability and setup times. This is finite-capacity scheduling, as opposed to theoretical planning based on unlimited capacity. Without it, dates calculated by an ERP remain indicative and do not reflect shop-floor reality.

Handle Unexpected Events Without Disrupting the Rest of the Shop Floor

Urgent orders, machine breakdowns and supplier delays: dynamic scheduling makes it possible to adjust priorities locally and reposition the affected POs without disrupting the entire schedule. This ability to respond methodically is what distinguishes a responsive shop floor from one that is permanently overloaded.

Communicate Priorities to Operators on the Shop Floor

A priority rule only delivers results if it is understood on the shop floor. Too often, priorities defined by the methods department do not reach the workstation clearly, leading operators to reorder POs based on their own judgment. Making priorities visible at the workstation, through a displayed schedule or mobile access, helps close this gap.

 

How to Measure Scheduling Effectiveness

Defining rules is not enough: a few indicators can be used to verify that scheduling is delivering the expected results.
