Methodology

What is a Gantt chart?

A Gantt chart is a visual project schedule that displays tasks as horizontal bars along a timeline, showing each task's start date, duration, and dependencies.

Visual Planning gestion de projets

How does a Gantt chart work?

Each row represents a task, and the horizontal axis represents time. The length of each bar shows how long the task takes, and arrows connect dependent tasks to show what has to finish before the next one can start.

What is a Gantt chart used for?

It gives teams an at-a-glance view of project progress, helps spot delays early, and makes it easy to identify the critical path — the sequence of tasks that, if delayed, pushes back the entire project's finish date.

Real-world example

On a construction project, a Gantt chart shows that site excavation has to finish before the foundation can be poured, which has to finish before framing begins. If excavation runs a week late, the scheduler immediately sees which downstream tasks shift as a result.

What are the pros and cons of a Gantt chart?

Its biggest strength is clarity: everyone on the team can see the project timeline and its dependencies at a glance. Its limit shows up on fast-changing projects with many parallel tasks, where the chart can get hard to read unless it's updated regularly or paired with a per-resource view.

Key takeaways

    • Visual project schedule using horizontal bars on a timeline.
    • Popularized by engineer Henry Gantt in the early 1900s.
    • Used to track progress and task dependencies.

Visual Planning includes an interactive Gantt chart with drag-and-drop dependency management.

Frequently asked questions

Who invented the Gantt chart?

The Gantt chart is named after Henry Gantt, an American engineer who popularized it in the early 1900s, though an earlier version was designed by Polish engineer Karol Adamiecki.

What's the difference between a Gantt chart and a Kanban board?

A Gantt chart plots tasks against time with specific durations, while a Kanban board organizes tasks by status (to do, in progress, done) with no timeline.

Is a Gantt chart useful for small teams?

Yes, but it becomes most valuable once several tasks depend on each other or there's a hard deadline to hit.

What software can create a Gantt chart?

Many tools offer this feature, including Visual Planning, which also lets you tie the chart directly to your available staff and equipment.
